Do I need long-term follow-up?

Most sinus disease results from chronic underlying conditions such as allergic rhinitis or problems with the immune system. These patients should follow up with their Rhinologist either on a regular basis or as needed when their symptoms flare up and require further treatment.

Occasionally, sinus problems result from anatomical abnormalities such as septal deviations, obstructed sinus openings due to enlarged adjacent structures in the nose, or odontogenic (tooth-related) infections involving the sinuses. Surgical correction often resolves their chronic or recurring symptoms, and these patients rarely require long-term follow up.

The bottom line: If you have recurring or bothersome symptoms, your Fellowship-trained Rhinologist is there to help determine the best treatments to improve your health and well-being long-term.

Recommendations for good sinus health:

  • Regular nasal saline irrigations (with or without medications)
  • Topical steroids (sprays or medicated rinses)
  • Allergy treatments (antihistamine medications, immunotherapy – allergy shots or drops if indicated)
  • Avoid decongestants (sprays or pills) whenever possible
  • If symptoms persist despite ongoing treatment, your physician should investigate for problems with immune system function
